My ceramics is inspired by the shapes, colors, and moods of nature— it could be the the organic lines of the forest, the movement of the sea, or the textures on the shoreline. I’m drawn to the raw beauty of these elements and the way they connect us to the world around us.
I primarily create lidded jars and vases, starting with a block of clay that I carve into shape in a way that resembles the Japanese kurinuki process. The excess clay is always reused, as one of the nice qualities of this material is its ability to be reshaped again and again until it expresses something exciting. For my lidded jars, I first carve the outer form, then slice through to create both the lid and the base. I love the tension between the wild, sculptural exterior and the precise process of shaping the rim and hollowing out the piece so that the lid and base fit together perfectly.
